With Grande Ourse and Petite Ourse, Andrée Putman develops an approach to the sofa as a domestic landscape, where the form immediately invites relaxation.
The fully rounded volumes are arranged in a soft continuity, without interruption, expressing an almost instinctive and self-evident sense of comfort. The seat and backrest create a welcoming envelope, designed to support the body rather than constrain it.
The base, composed of semi-spheres, introduces a subtle interplay between stability and softness. These supports seem to lift the volume lightly, as though the sofa were gently floating within the space.
The attention to detail is particularly evident in the treatment of the backrest, conceived as an element attached to the structure. This visible articulation introduces a constructive reading of the object, where the different layers remain distinct without disrupting the overall formal unity.
Good to know
This armchair was designed by Andrée Putman in 2001 as part of the renovation of the French Ministry of National Education. Defined by its distinctive saucer-shaped feet, it became one of the studio’s signature designs. It fits equally well within a ministerial setting, retail projects, or private residences.
