In the heart of Monaco, the Gildo Pastor Center, entirely redesigned by Andrée Putman in 1996, unfolds as a building of light and rhythm. Hélène Pastor entrusted the project to Andrée Putman, who promised, “Madame, we will create a staircase like your necklace.” The staircase, the true vertical heart of the building, traverses and connects all the spaces, guiding the eye, orchestrating the volumes, and setting the tempo for the entire project.
Every space, from the halls to the mezzanines, is conceived as a sequence, where fluidity and articulation engage in dialogue with natural light. Materials resonate throughout the rooms, creating a subtle and harmonious language in which every detail reveals the Putman signature. Volumes open or close according to perception, offering intimate or generous perspectives depending on the moment and viewpoint.
The Gildo Pastor Center exemplifies Andrée Putman’s art: transforming a functional building into a sensitive experience. In every space, light, proportion, and rhythm intertwine, and each step on the staircase becomes a choreographed journey, where the architecture reads as a visual and emotional narrative.
