The Éléphant bench perfectly illustrates the universe of Andrée Putman: an ordinary object diverted, rethought, and almost staged. By transforming a public bench into a kind of throne, she introduces a subtle shift and a discreet irony that characterize her approach to design.
Its deliberately bold proportions reinforce a pronounced verticality that may evoke her own presence: a slender, upright, and assured silhouette. The material, free from superfluous effects, is enhanced through the purity of the design and the balance of its lines. Despite its sculptural appearance, the object remains functional and designed for use, offering a comfortable and accessible seat.
This bench clearly expresses Putman’s design language: a refined yet tension-filled form, where elegance emerges from a subtle détourning of established codes while always keeping function at the center of the project. Through her work on a simple and archetypal form, she deconstructs and reinterprets it into a singular, almost sculptural object that plays with perceptions of space and volume.
The name Éléphant reinforces this impression of massive and stable presence while adding a playful and memorable dimension to the object.

Good to know
Created for the CAPC – CAPC Musée d’art contemporain de Bordeaux project in the late 1980s, the Éléphant bench was conceived as an integral element of the building’s architecture. Produced in numerous versions and scales—from single-seat and two-seat models to monumental lengths of several meters—it clearly asserts its role in structuring space as much as in accommodating the body.
It can be found in both prestigious public spaces and private interiors, where it brings a sense of understated modernity and minimalist elegance. It thus demonstrates Andrée Putman’s ability to transform a functional object into a piece of strong aesthetic value, through the work of Andrée Putman.
