Imagined in 1984 by Andrée Putman for the Ministère de la Culture, this small seat embodies a reflection on essentials: reducing the object to its most accurate presence without sacrificing comfort. Despite its compact scale, the piece offers a remarkably enveloping quality. Its precise and continuous design embraces the body through a simple, almost instinctive gesture, where every curve seems dictated by use. The economy of formal means—absence of unnecessary effects and controlled lines—reinforces the object’s clarity and readability. Nothing distracts from the experience: sitting becomes a direct relationship between body and form. Through this piece, Andrée Putman reaffirms a constant position within her work: minimalism is not reduction, but intensification. A discreet presence, conceived to endure.

Good to know
Following her American and international success with the opening of the Morgans Hotel in 1984 (the world’s first boutique hotel) and its iconic black-and-white checkerboard bathroom, Andrée Putman accompanied Jack Lang “under the gilding of the Republic” during his appointment at the Ministry of Culture. This armchair was one of the pieces created for that project and is presented today in new finishes.
