In 1995, filmmaker Peter Greenaway entrusted Andrée Putman with the design of the sets for The Pillow Book, shot in Hong Kong. The film’s visual universe — between sensuality and graphic rigor — found a unique resonance in her work. Putman created spaces that are minimalist yet visually intense, where materials, perspectives, and framing become integral to the narrative.
The interiors unfold like silent architectures: plays of transparency, geometric structures, and dialogues between shadow and light. Within this setting, bodies and calligraphy emerge as living artworks, extending the staging down to the smallest details of the décor. The collaboration between Greenaway and Putman marks a rare moment where cinema and interior design converge, creating a shared language that is simultaneously visual, poetic, and deeply sensual.
