Madeleine Vionnet at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris
2009
In 2009, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris paid tribute to Madeleine Vionnet with a retrospective. The exhibition showcased the work of this fashion purist, tracing the career of the pioneering couturier known for bias cuts, draping, and geometric forms in haute couture. Entrusted with the scenography, Andrée Putman arranged over 130 pieces from the museum’s heritage collection, complemented by documents, photographs, and pattern sheets. Each room offered a chronological and thematic reading: soft draping, bias cuts, and geometric shapes (square, rectangle, circle) were highlighted through respectful lighting and minimalist display cases that allowed the work to speak for itself.
